What is the Big Bang theory?
The Big Bang theory is the belief that at some specific point in the past all the matter in the universe that ever existed and which exists today, came into existence. The beginnings of this idea date back to 1916 when Einstein introduced his General Theory of Relativity which was a new theory of gravity which described gravity as a distortion of time and space.
It is believed that about 12-14 billion years ago, all this matter was compacted in a hot dense point just a few millimetres across: described as a 'singularity'.
A singularity is thought to be an area with such immense gravitational pressure that finite matter is compressed to the point where it has infinite density. Singularities are believed to be at the centre of black holes.
The Big Bang theory says that at some point, this singularity began to expand or explode outwards so that all the matter inside it spread out and filled what we call the universe. It is at this moment, that time and space are also thought to have begun.
It needs to be asked, "Where did the singularity come from?"
THERE ARE TWO REASONS WHY THE "BIG BANG" THEORY OF THE ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE CANNOT BE BELIEVED
1. It is not good science and scientists are beginning to speak up about this.
In the May 22, 2004 issue of New Scientist, an open letter to the scientific community is written - mainly by SECULAR scientists (i.e. they do not believe in the Bible's account of creation). In this letter they challenge the theory of the origin of the universe by a Big Bang - the explosion of energy and the beginning of an ever expanding universe. These scientists state clearly that the vast number of arbitrary assumptions and the lack of successful big bang predictions challenge the the theory of the big bang as one that can be taken seriously.
Here is a quote from the introduction to their statement...
"The big bang today relies on a growing number of hypothetical entities, things that we have never observed - inflation, dark matter and dark energy are the most prominent examples. Without them, there would be a fatal contradiction between the observations made by astronomers and the predictions of the big bang theory. In no other field of physics would this continual recourse to new hypothetical objects be accepted as a way of bridging the gap between theory and observation. It would, at the least, raise serious questions about the validity of the underlying theory."
This statement has SINCE been signed by hundreds of other professors and scientists at various institutions. The Big Bang theory is an unscientific and unsuccessful attempt to replace the biblical explanation of the creation of the universe by God. The greatest failure of the Big Bang theory is that it fails categorically to address the issue of where the 'singularity' came from along with time, space and the laws of physics with govern the universe.
2. It is not good theology and Christians need to think very hard about this.
This problem can easily be show by a comparison between the order of events that are supposed to have happened in the Big Bang and the order in which they happen in the biblical account of creation.
A COMPARISON BETWEEN THE "BIG BANG" AND "CREATION"
When you take an honest look at the source information on Creation and the Big Bang, there is no way you can make the Big Bang theory fit with the way the Bible says God created the world.
The Big Bang theory says the universe was formed over billions of years.
The Bible says it was created in six days.
The Big Bang says that stars existed billions of years before the earth.
The Bible says the stars were created three days after the earth.
Have a look at the chart below and see how different these two beliefs are.
Note the different time in which the EARTH and the STARS arrived in these two explanations.
BIG BANG: Billions of years - STARS come before EARTH
|BIG BANG||STARS||SUN||MOLTEN EARTH||FIRST OCEANS|
|15 Billion Years Ago||10 Billion Years Ago||5 Billion Years Ago||4.5 Billion Years Ago||3.8 Billion Years Ago|
CREATION: 6 days - EARTH created before STARS
|WATER COVERED EARTH||DRY LAND & PLANTS||SUN MOON & STARS||SEA & FLYING CREATURES||LAND ANIMALS & HUMANKIND|
|Days 1-2||Day 3||Day 4||Day 5||Day 6|
The above illustration is only a small example of how different these two views on the origin of the universe are.
From this illustration it can be seen that it is not possible to believe the Bible account of the origin of the universe & the Big Bang theory at the same time. Not only do they simply not match, but a growing number of recognised scientists are also saying that the Big Bang cannot be presented as a valid scientific theory.
For the Christian however, what the scientists say here is not actually all that important. The fact is that if you believe the Bible to be the true inspired Word of God, then you can believe and trust what God says about how he created the universe.
